Scream 7: Neve Campbell on Authentic Fear and the Elusive Perfect Scream
The highly anticipated Scream 7 is set to hit theaters on February 27, bringing back Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott alongside a fresh generation facing the iconic Ghostface. Recent insights from IGN’s Fan Fest 2026 reveal the challenges of portraying genuine fear on screen and the complexities of crafting a compelling slasher film, as discussed by Campbell and director/co-writer Kevin Williamson.
Sidney Prescott’s Evolving Fear
Neve Campbell, reprising her role as Sidney Prescott, discussed the nuanced portrayal of fear in the Scream franchise. “Sydney, less so now because she’s got a bit of ‘I’ve got this,’ but it’s still there,” Campbell explained. She emphasized the importance of showcasing varying degrees of fear and strength within each scene, noting that a truthful performance requires a spectrum of emotional depth. “You have to find what levels of fear the person’s in and what levels of strength she has in every moment and why. Each of those moments are different depending on what’s happening personally within the scene.”
The Art of the Scream
Kevin Williamson, the writer of the original Scream and director of the seventh installment, highlighted the difficulty of convincingly portraying a scream. He revealed that a genuine scream originates from a visceral place, making it impossible to simply “add” in post-production. “There’s this thing about when you fake a scream, you can notice it,” Williamson stated. “You can tell someone’s faking a scream. It has to scream. It comes from the gut. It’s part of the performance. And it will read.”
A Franchise in Transition
Scream 7 arrives after significant cast changes, following the departure of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega from the franchise. Barrera was fired due to posts regarding the Gaza war, which Spyglass deemed antisemitic, and Ortega left shortly after. The film promises to deliver twists and turns, with reports suggesting the return of previously concluded characters. The return of Neve Campbell is seen as a central element of the new installment, following a salary dispute that kept her from appearing in Scream VI.
