Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is innovating again! This time the creativity finds a way to expand security checkpoint throughput in a space-constrained terminal. How? By going downstairs for more room.
The new Checkpoint 1 at SEA is the first checkpoint on the lower Baggage Claim Level of the terminal. Located at the former site of Bag Claim 1, the new checkpoint adds five security lanes with spacious queuing and recomposure areas, glass display cases with public art, a choice for convenient gate access, and even a sneaky “travel hack” for lower drive drop-offs.
“Our challenge has been how do we continue to provide a high level of customer service in a footprint that can’t expand – this project is the latest example of doing more with what we have,” said Laurel Dunphy, SEA Airport Interim Chief Operating Officer. “Travelers will see even more project openings between now and the World Cup next year with SEA Gateway, C Concourse Expansion, A Concourse Lounge Expansion, and Roadway Improvements.”

The five new lanes will open as general screening lanes, with the potential for TSA PreCheck and SEA Spot Saver in the future. This brings the total number of screening lanes at SEA to 33. Checkpoint 6, when fully opened, will provide an additional six lanes, two in late summer and the rest before Thanksgiving.
About 2,000 square feet of queuing space lies in front of Checkpoint 1, plus more seating space to gather your things after you complete screening.
Art Beautifies
A dramatic set of glass cases outline the edge of the new checkpoint, displaying public art to travelers inside and outside the checkpoint. More than 20 new pieces of art are showcased as part of SEA’s ever-increasing art collection — one of the largest airport collections in the country!
Decision Point
Once through screening at the new checkpoint, travelers will choose the easiest way to get to their gate or concourse. They’ll find flight information displays on a landing between escalators that lead straight up to the A gates, or down to catch the SEA Underground to the S gates or the north end concourses. Whatever route you like!
Travel Hack
With checkpoints on both levels, incoming vehicle traffic can use the shortest route to arrive on the drives. No checked bags? How about going to the far end of the Arrivals drive and dropping off your traveler right next to the new Checkpoint 1! They’ll get screened and can head to their gate in no time, or enjoy a little extra time for a bite, drink, or shopping.
Project Funding
The new Checkpoint 1 is part of the Upgrade SEA projects, which includes $5 billion in capital investment over the next five years.
Total estimated project cost for the Checkpoint 1 Relocation is $37 million. Funding for the project comes from a combination of Airport Development Fund, Future Revenue Bonds, and a Federal Aviation Administration Grant. As with virtually all airport projects, no taxpayer dollars are used to fund the project.
