The Long Haul: Maximizing Fuel Efficiency on Road Trips

The question of whether a single tank of fuel can get you to your destination is a perennial concern for road trippers. With fluctuating fuel prices and a growing awareness of environmental impact, optimizing fuel efficiency is more important than ever. We decided to put this to the test, embarking on a 650-kilometer journey from Pardubice to Gdansk, Poland, to investigate the factors influencing how far you can travel on a single fill-up. Our goal wasn’t simply to save money, but to understand the interplay between vehicle characteristics, driving habits, and road conditions.

The Appeal of Older Diesel Technology for Distance

For this experiment, we selected a 2009 Audi A4 equipped with a 1.9 TDI diesel engine and automatic transmission. This choice wasn’t arbitrary.Older diesel engines, notably those with simpler designs and larger fuel tanks, often prove remarkably efficient for long-distance travel. Our test vehicle boasted a 70-liter tank, providing a substantial fuel reserve.Recent data from the European Surroundings Agency shows that while newer diesel engines face stricter emissions regulations, older models can still offer competitive fuel economy on highways. This is due to their robust construction and ability to maintain consistent performance over extended periods. Unlike the highly-tuned engines of modern vehicles, these older diesels prioritize durability and efficiency over peak power.

Real-World Fuel Consumption and results

Throughout the predominantly highway-based journey,we maintained a realistic driving pace,utilizing cruise control whenever possible to minimize fluctuations in speed. This mirrored typical road trip conditions rather than a controlled laboratory setting. The result? An average fuel consumption of 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

Upon arrival in Gdansk, we were pleased to find that nearly half a tank of fuel remained. This definitively answered our initial question: with careful vehicle selection and mindful driving, reaching a destination 650 kilometers away on a single tank is entirely achievable. In contrast, a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle would likely require an additional refueling stop, given the generally lower energy density of gasoline compared to diesel. This difference highlights the continued relevance of diesel technology for long-distance travel,particularly for those prioritizing range and efficiency.
