Ofner and Schwärzler Secure Challenger Titles in Thionville and Kigali

Sebastian Ofner of Austria claimed his second consecutive Challenger title on Sunday, defeating Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in a thrilling final at the Thionville Challenger in France. Simultaneously, compatriot Joel Schwärzler secured his second career Challenger tournament victory in Kigali, Rwanda.

Ofner Triumphs in Thionville

The fourth-seeded Ofner overcame Norway’s Nicolai Budkov Kjaer 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(7) after a grueling 2 hours and 14 minutes. This victory elevates Ofner to a projected ranking of 85th in the world on Monday. Sofascore reported the match details.

It marked the first career meeting between the two players. The deciding set remained on serve, forcing a tiebreak where Ofner initially faced a match point before ultimately prevailing on his second opportunity.

“The joy is of course huge because it was a tough beginning this year. The fact that it worked out like this, with two tournament wins in a row, is unbelievable,” Ofner stated. He attributed his success to increased self-confidence and reliance on his physical and technical abilities.

Reaching the final already guaranteed Ofner’s return to the top 100, and now, as Austria’s number one, he looks ahead to clay court season, targeting a third consecutive Challenger title at the Murcia tournament starting March 16th.

Schwärzler Wins in Kigali

In Kigali, 20-year-old Schwärzler defeated Italian qualifier Stefano Napolitano 7-6(5), 7-6(6) in a final that was suspended the previous day due to inclement weather. This win propels Schwärzler into the top 200 of the world rankings, placing him as Austria’s new number three, projected to be within the top 175 on Monday.
