Norwegian Government Holds Classified Meeting Amidst Royal Family Scrutiny

Oslo, Norway – The Norwegian government convened a closed-door meeting on Wednesday afternoon to discuss a classified matter, a move occurring amidst heightened public attention surrounding Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the royal family. The meeting’s agenda remains undisclosed, and officials have been tight-lipped about its purpose.

Meeting Details and Government Silence

According to Nettavisen, the government initiated the meeting, described as “extraordinary, and graded.” Ministries contacted by Nettavisen deferred inquiries to the Prime Minister’s Office (SMK). Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik’s office, for example, stated the minister was in Bardufoss for the Cold Response exercise and directed further questions to SMK. Similar responses were received from the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness, and the office of the Minister of Health and Welfare, Jan Christian Vestre.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre was in Stockholm during the meeting and did not attend. As of Wednesday evening, SMK had not responded to requests for comment. The Defense and the Police Security Service (PST) also declined to comment on whether the meeting’s content affected their sectors or if a specific incident prompted it, Nettavisen reported.

Possible Reasons for the Classified Meeting

Carl-Erik Grimstad, a former secretary to the Crown Princess and a parliamentary representative for the Liberal Party, and author of six books about the history and function of the royal house, suggested three potential reasons for holding such a confidential meeting. These include the conclusion of contracts and state financial matters requiring discretion, foreign and defense policy issues – including acts of war – and a request initiated by the King himself.

Recent Scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marit

The meeting takes place against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marit following the release of information regarding her past correspondence with the late Jeffrey Epstein. News in English details the public apology issued by the Crown Princess after the release of hundreds of emails exchanged with Epstein.

TV2 reports that Crown Princess Mette-Marit will not attend the upcoming state visit from Belgium due to a worsening health condition. The Crown Princess has indicated she will provide a more detailed statement regarding her relationship with Epstein, but has not yet done so.

The Norwegian Library Association has also announced the termination of its patronage with Crown Princess Mette-Marit, citing concerns over breaches of trust and a lack of transparency.

Looking Ahead

The government’s silence regarding the purpose of Wednesday’s meeting continues to fuel speculation. Further details are expected to emerge as the situation develops, particularly as Crown Princess Mette-Marit prepares to address the public regarding her connection to Jeffrey Epstein.
