Puerto Rico Hosts Summit to Strengthen Consumer Rights and Commerce

Teh president of the Senate of Puerto Rico, Thomas Rivera schatz, along with Senator Héctor Joaquín Sánchez Álvarez, and the secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO), Valerie Rodríguez Erazo, recently convened the “Consumer and Commerce Summit.” The goal was to foster dialogue, analysis, and collaboration between government leaders, commercial sector representatives, and citizens to bolster consumer rights protection.

“This Consumer and Commerce Summit represents a firm step towards a more fair, clear, and balanced economy, where the rules equally protect buyers and sellers, and where every transaction reflects the equity and trust of a fair system,” stated Rivera schatz. “The consumer is central to all economic activity. Protecting their rights isn’t an obstacle to advancement, but the foundation of a healthy, stable, and sustainable market.We also recognize that responsible merchants-those who comply, innovate, and create jobs-need clear rules, efficient processes, and a government that listens and collaborates.”

Rivera Schatz emphasized the Senate’s proactive role in promoting legislation to strengthen oversight,encourage voluntary compliance,streamline procedures,and modernize supervisory mechanisms. “Our aim is to ensure progress is accompanied by order,ethics,and justice,” he said. He also noted the Senate’s support for initiatives focused on responsible energy regulation, product safety, and reinforcing DACO’s role as a supervisory entity.

Senator Sánchez Álvarez, representing the district of carolina and chairing the Commission on Transportation, Telecommunications, Public Services and Consumer Affairs, affirmed their commitment to consumer protection, strengthening commerce, and building a fairer, more transparent, and responsible market for Puerto Rico.
