Ottawa Senators Owner Calls Out “Soft Tampering” Amid Brady Tkachuk Trade Rumors

Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer fired shots at alleged “soft tampering” on Monday, expressing outrage over a New York Post report linking Senators captain Brady Tkachuk to potential trade talks with the New York Rangers.

Protecting Players and Families

“This is about protecting our fans, our players, and their families,” Andlauer stated upon arriving at the NHL’s Board of Governors’ meeting in Florida. “Brady and his wife (Emma) just had a baby. They don’t need that in their lives.”

Ottawa’s Past Tampering Penalties

While Andlauer refrained from directly naming the Rangers, the implication was clear. Notably absent from his statement, but highlighted by others, was Ottawa’s previous penalty – the loss of a first-round draft pick – stemming from their role in the failed Evgeni Dadonov trade involving Vegas and Anaheim in July 2021. Ottawa, who initially traded Dadonov to Vegas, failed to properly inform the Golden Knights about the player’s no-trade clause.

Seeking Accountability

Sources indicate that the Senators believe that if they face consequences for rule violations, others should be held to the same standard. The possibility of formally requesting tampering charges against the Rangers remains, although Andlauer confirmed he hasn’t taken that step yet. Any further action, according to sources, hinges on the NHL’s assessment of the situation.

Rangers Respond

The Rangers swiftly released a statement denying any wrongdoing, stating, “This is an irresponsible accusation and we defer to the commissioner’s office.”

NHL’s Crackdown on Tampering

These accusations arise amidst heightened scrutiny on tampering within the league. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly issued a warning to general managers during a meeting in Toronto, followed by a detailed memo sent to all teams in November, reiterating rules and penalties associated with tampering. Notably, the NHL proactively investigated John Tavares’s signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite no formal request from the Islanders, ensuring a clean transaction.

Looking Ahead

The situation remains fluid, leaving fans and analysts alike wondering what steps, if any, the NHL will take. Will this incident serve as a catalyst for stricter enforcement against tampering, or will it fade into another controversy? Only time will tell.
