The golf situation is advancing at supersonic speed. The shock wave caused by the fracture between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf claimed a new victim this week: it is the executive head of the DP World Tour, Keith Pelleyone of the main opponents of the merger between both circuits.
Pelley, according to several media reports, is going to his native country, Canada, to take up an executive position within Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment, a company that manages sports franchises such as the Toronto Raptors of the NBA or the Toronto FC of the MLS.
We will see if the departure of the Canadian executive really represents the rapprochement of positions that golf needs. Kelley spoke out against a possible agreement with the Saudis and signed an alliance with the PGA Tour that did not convince many of the DP World Tour players, who felt that their product was devalued.
In addition, Pelley established a very aggressive policy of fines against historic European Tour players who left for LIV. One of them is Sergio Garciawho this Wednesday participated in a virtual press conference with his Fireballs teammate Abraham Ancer before the imminent start of the LIV Golf season.
When asked by EL MUNDO about his future this season on the DP World Tour, Sergio was emphatic. “I have been studying the possibility of playing the European tour and regaining my membership, but after seeing what they have done to some players who have kept it, it is not worth it to me. I do not want to pay all the fines so that later They have kept me for a year without being able to play the Tour. It’s nonsense. Let’s hope that changes and I can be a member of the European Tour again, I would like to play it, support it, because I have always loved it. They have to give me and other players better opportunities to be able to return,” commented the Spaniard.
