Seth Dunwoody Claims Elite Men’s Title at Irish Road Championships

Seth Dunwoody of the Bahrain Victorious Development Team won the elite men’s title at the Irish Road Championships in Cong, County Mayo, on Sunday, defeating defending champion Rory Townsend in a sprint finish, Cycling Ireland confirmed.

The 20-year-old rider, who finished second in the U23 Paris-Roubaix and U23 In Flanders Fields races this year, secured his first major victory after a 171km race marked by high winds and challenging climbs that reduced the peloton to a final group of four contenders, according to race reports.

Race Conditions and Contenders

The early stages of the race saw the initial group of 20 riders gradually whittled down due to the harsh weather, with the final four—Dunwoody, Townsend, Finn Crockett (VolkerWessels), and Conn McDunphy (APS)—breaking away in the final 28km. Townsend attempted a premature sprint with 200m to go, but Dunwoody overcame the challenge to take the win, according to race officials.

Dunwoody’s Emotional Victory

Dunwoody, who lost his grandmother over Christmas, described the win as a tribute to her, stating, “I really, really wanted to win a big race for her.” He also reflected on the recent death of 17-year-old Irish cyclist Shane O’Brien, a friend of his teammate Liam O’Brien, saying, “It was tough.”
