Seth MacFarlane: No Plans for ‘Ted’ Season 3 Due to High Costs

‘Ted’ Series Likely Ending After Season 2 Due to High Production Costs

Peacock’s “Ted” prequel series, a comedy based on the popular film franchise, is unlikely to return for a third season, according to creator and star Seth MacFarlane. The primary reason cited is the show’s substantial production expenses, largely driven by the extensive leverage of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the titular character to life.

CGI Costs Prove Problematic

MacFarlane explained to The Wrap that the show’s high costs have made a potential renewal difficult. “What I kept hearing [from Peacock and Universal] was, ‘Listen, the show is really expensive to produce and there’s no way to do it at a lower cost,’” MacFarlane said. He responded by crafting a season finale that seemingly sets up a transition for the character of John Bennett, played by Max Burkholder, towards becoming the Mark Wahlberg character from the original “Ted” films.

“So I wrote the last scene with Max [Burkholder] walking into a gym, presumably coming out as Mark Wahlberg in the first ‘Ted’ film,” MacFarlane stated. While a third season isn’t entirely off the table, MacFarlane acknowledged it would require “narrative acrobatics” to overcome the financial hurdles.

Comparing ‘Ted’ to Other VFX-Heavy Series

The challenges faced by “Ted” are not unique. Paramount+’s “Knuckles” series, a spin-off of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise, similarly limited the screen time of its central character to manage production costs. According to reports, Knuckles appeared for only 75 minutes of the show’s 168-minute runtime.

‘Ted’ Series Overview

“Ted” premiered on Peacock on January 11, 2024, and concluded its second season on March 5, 2026. The series serves as a prequel to the “Ted” films, set between 1993 and 1994, and follows a 16-year-old John Bennett and his best friend, the foul-mouthed teddy bear Ted, in Framingham, Massachusetts. The show stars Seth MacFarlane (voice of Ted), Max Burkholder, Alanna Ubach, Scott Grimes, and Giorgia Whigham.

In May 2025, Peacock announced plans for an animated “Ted” series featuring the original film’s stars Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth reprising their roles.

Future of the Franchise

While the live-action prequel series may be concluding, the “Ted” franchise continues to expand with the animated series. However, the financial realities of producing a CGI-heavy live-action show appear to be a significant factor in the future direction of the franchise.
