Cyberattack Disrupts South East Technological University’s Waterford Campuses
South East Technological University (SETU)’s Waterford campuses were targeted by a significant cyberattack, leading to the cancellation of Monday’s classes and widespread disruption.
Classes Cancelled, Internet and Email Services Down
The attack impacted internet connectivity and access to crucial online facilities, including internal emails and online learning platforms. Staff were informed by email about the “cybersecurity incident” targeting the institution’s IT systems.
SETU reassured staff that the incident was detected early and its IT team, in cooperation with external cybersecurity experts, is working diligently to resolve the issue and minimize the impact.
Data Breach Unconfirmed
While investigations are ongoing, SETU stated that currently there is no evidence suggesting any data or information breach. However, the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) branch at Waterford campus, in an email to members, cautioned that the full extent of the damage might not be known until the end of next week.
Limited Access Expected for the Week
The TUI email indicated that staff may experience internet downtime for the coming week, prompting them to utilize home computers for printing class materials. SETU confirmed this in their email to staff, highlighting potential disruptions for those on Waterford campuses.
Focus on Minimizing Disruption
SETU emphasized its commitment to mitigating the impact of the cyberattack, focusing on restoring services and ensuring minimal disruption to academic activities. Classroom instruction at SETU’s other campuses will continue as scheduled, and apprenticeship classes at Waterford will also remain unaffected.
