From Rugby Pitch to NFL: Aaron Sexton Takes on the Challenge
Fast-paced rugby player Aaron Sexton is making a daring move – trading in his boots for American football cleats. The Ulster player has announced his decision to leave rugby and join the NFL’s 2025 International Player Pathway Program (IPP).
A Speedy Start to a New Journey
Sexton, known for his impressive speed, hasn’t featured for Ulster this season. He’s eager for a fresh start in the United States and sees the IPP as the perfect opportunity to showcase his athleticism on a new field.
The IPP is a pathway designed to identify global talent and provide elite athletes the chance to develop their skills in American Football. Several Irish athletes have already made waves in the program, impressing with their kicking abilities at the NFL Combine. Former rugby player Darragh Leader and Down’s Charlie Smyth, who signed with the New Orleans Saints roster, highlight the program’s success.
Sexton: Speed Demon with Football Dreams
At 24, Sexton’s athletic prowess has been evident since his youth. A national sprint champion at 16, he later focused on rugby, signing his first professional contract at 18. He excelled as a sprinter in both 100m and 200m events, even narrowly missing a medal in the 200m at the 2019 European Under-20 Championships.
Since joining Ulster in 2019, he’s represented the Ireland Sevens team and accumulated ten senior appearances.
Sexton will be focusing on a different route than traditional kickers. His plan is to develop his skills as a wide receiver/returner, capitalizing on his undeniable speed. He cites the success of DK Metcalf and Louis Rees-Zammit, who transitioned from rugby to American football, as inspirations for his own journey.
“Around four or five years ago now, when I was still sprinting and seeing DK Metcalf (Seahawks wide receiver) race. I was at the US trials, where he was racing sprinters.
“He ran 10.34 and I was running 10.43, so I know that I have got the speed.”
“I’m just champing at the bit right now. I’m running in a park on my own, doing my drills, doing my homework. ”
“Obviously, I do know I still have a lot to grow and a lot to learn. But yeah, I’m looking to go out, enjoy it and perform.”
On the Road to the NFL
Sexton’s transition starts with a ten-week intensive training program at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he will focus on both on-field football skills and classroom learning. He will then have the opportunity to showcase his skills at the University of South Florida’s Pro Day in March and the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February.
The IPP is a key step in the NFL’s global expansion, with hopes of an NFL game in Dublin in the near future. Sexton’s journey exemplifies this growth and commitment to international talent.
“I know it’s going to be a tough task. It will be new to me and I know the complexity of it, but it’s something I’m really looking forward to. I want to put my best foot forward. I know the task at hand is a big one. I’m not taking that for granted.”
