Lowry’s Late Collapse Hands Echavarria Cognizant Classic Victory
A disastrous finish to his final round at the Cognizant Classic in Florida saw Shane Lowry relinquish a three-stroke lead with three holes to play, ultimately settling for a share of second place. The 38-year-vintage’s bid for an individual title, absent since the 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, was thwarted by a late-round collapse, despite previously securing success at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Rory McIlroy.
Final Leaderboard
Lowry had finished in the top five at his adopted hometown event in three of the last four years. After reaching 19 under at the 15th hole and establishing a three-shot advantage over Colombia’s Nico Echavarria, he appeared poised for victory. However, a series of errors on the closing holes dramatically altered his fate.
The Bear Trap Bites Back
The turning point came at the 16th hole, where Lowry found water off the tee with a wayward drive. Despite scrambling for a double bogey – his first in 305 holes – the damage was done, reducing his lead to one stroke. Incredibly, he repeated the mistake at the par-three 17th, again finding water off the tee, allowing Echavarria to take a two-stroke lead heading into the final hole.
Lowry faced a demanding approach from the greenside bunker on the 18th, requiring a holed-out shot to force a playoff. Unable to execute, he finished with a par for a round of 68, sharing second place with Taylor Moore and Austin Smotherman.
Echavarria Secures Improbable Victory
Lowry’s misfortune paved the way for an improbable victory and a $1.7 million payday for Echavarria, marking his third success on the PGA Tour.
A Round of Contrasts for Lowry
Lowry’s day began promisingly, sharing the lead with Austin Smotherman. He saved par at the first with a 10-foot putt and followed with three consecutive pars, narrowly missing a birdie opportunity at the par-five third.
Momentum shifted at the fifth hole, where a 45-foot birdie putt found the bottom of the cup, tying him for the lead. He narrowly avoided disaster at the sixth, salvaging par with a 20-foot putt after a sliced tee shot.
Echavarria briefly took the outright lead at the seventh, but Lowry responded at the ninth, chipping in for a birdie after a 273-yard drive. He continued his strong form at the 10th, carding an eagle after a 341-yard drive and a 16-foot putt, taking the lead once more.
He extended his advantage to two shots at the 12th, benefiting from a fortunate lie after his tee shot. A subsequent birdie at the 13th pushed him to five under for five holes.
The Collapse
The three-stroke advantage held until the 16th, where Lowry’s charge unraveled. After finding water off the tee, his approach landed in a greenside bunker, resulting in a double bogey and reducing his lead to one stroke. The situation deteriorated further at the 17th, with another tee shot finding water, leaving his chances of victory severely diminished.
Echavarria secured the win with a par putt on the 18th, while Lowry’s par completed his round of 68 and a three-way tie for second.
