Chicago Street Race Defies the Forecast, Van Gisbergen Claims Victory

The 2025 NASCAR Grant Park 165 concluded in Chicago under cloudy, but ultimately dry, skies – a welcome change for a race that has faced weather-related disruptions in previous years. Fans arrived prepared for potential downpours, demonstrating a seasoned awareness of the event’s history.

Fan Ingenuity and Weather Lore

Spectators weren’t simply bracing for rain; some actively sought to influence it. Aaron Moy, a dedicated fan from Morton Grove, showcased a remarkable piece of fan engineering: an “Anti-Rain Vortex” hat. This creation, featuring a spiraling strip of laminated paper powered by a small motor, was a playful attempt to leverage the popular “vortex theory” amongst NASCAR enthusiasts. This theory suggests the circular motion of the cars might, in a humorous way, deflect approaching storms.

Beyond inventive headwear, manny attendees relied on more conventional methods, such as disposable ponchos, and had contingency plans in place should the weather turn unfavorable. The anticipation of potential rain didn’t dampen spirits, however.

first-Timers Embrace the Chicago NASCAR Experience

For some, the 2025 race marked their inaugural experience with NASCAR in Chicago. Taylor Little and Alex Rupprecht, both 20 years old, found a unique vantage point atop an electrical service box, embracing the unpredictable nature of a street race. Little even expressed excitement at the prospect of a rain-affected event, acknowledging the added element of challenge and spectacle.

Van Gisbergen Dominates, Future of Chicago Race Uncertain

Despite the favorable weather conditions, the outcome mirrored previous success for Shane van Gisbergen. The New Zealand racer secured a decisive victory, completing a sweep of the Chicago Street Race weekend and winning his fourth of six eligible races this season.

“I’m a lucky guy,” Van Gisbergen stated, acknowledging the support of both JR Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing.”cool to win here again, I’ve had a great run with this place and I’ve realy enjoyed it.”

Van Gisbergen’s enthusiasm for the Chicago event is clear, stating, “(Chicago) has changed my life. I hope it stays next year.” though, this year’s race concluded the third and final year of NASCAR’s current contract with the city, leaving the future of the event uncertain. As of July 7, 2025, negotiations for a renewal have not been publicly announced. The economic impact of the race, estimated at over $100 million for the city in 2024 according to the Chicago Sports Commission, will likely be a key factor in those discussions.
