Navigating Controversy: Anupam Mittal Calls for Accountability in the Age of Viral Content

Anupam Mittal, the prominent entrepreneur and judge on India’s Shark Tank, recently sparked a debate when he weighed in on the controversy surrounding offensive comments made on the show, India’s Got Latent, by content creator Ranveer Allahbadia and co-host Apoorva.

Taking to LinkedIn, Mittal did not shy away from condemning the language used, describing it as “unacceptable” in any civilized society. However, he went further, asserting that the real culprits lie not with the individuals, but with platforms like YouTube, which he argued, actively promote such content for its virality and inherent shock value.

"India’s Got Latent wasn’t some Satyamev Jayate ka lost episode," Mittal wrote, pointing out the show’s deliberate formula of irreverence and provocation. He contends that these platforms “dangle virality like prasad,” enticing creators to chase attention-grabbing content, while remaining detached from responsibility when things go wrong.

Mittal’s statement reflects a growing concern about the role of social media in amplifying harmful content. He argues that platforms like YouTube operate under a "digital intermediary" exemption, allowing them to avoid accountability for the content they host.

He compares this situation to traditional media, where outlets like newspapers and television channels face legal and ethical repercussions for publishing offensive material. In Mittal’s view, this disparity needs to be addressed. He suggests that platforms should be held responsible for the content they promote, potentially leading to stricter regulations or improved compliance with existing ones.

While Allahbadia has since issued an apology for his remarks, Mittal believes that the focus should shift to the larger issue. He calls for a fundamental re-evaluation of social media ethics and the responsibility of platforms in curating and managing the content they distribute.

The controversy sparked by Mittal’s remarks has ignited a debate about the future of online content moderation. It raises critical questions about the balance between freedom of expression and the need to protect users from harmful content. As social media continues to evolve, finding sustainable solutions to these complex challenges will be crucial.
