Sharks Terminate Jeff Skinner’s Contract, Forward to Develop into UFA

The San Jose Sharks have placed forward Jeff Skinner on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination, the team announced Monday. If Skinner clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) and be eligible to sign with any NHL team.

Skinner’s Stint with the Sharks

Skinner signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Sharks in July 2025, but his time with the team was short-lived. He recorded six goals, seven assists, and 13 points in 32 games this season, with a minus-8 rating. Skinner hadn’t played for San Jose since January 11, serving as a healthy scratch for the preceding 10 games.

Career Overview

The 33-year-old Skinner has played 1,110 NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose Sharks. He has 379 goals and 333 assists for a total of 712 points. Skinner won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year in 2010-11 with Carolina. Last season with the Oilers, he had 16 goals and 13 assists in 72 games.

Contract Details and Waivers

Skinner’s contract originally included a full no-move clause through January 30, which then shifted to an eight-team trade list. However, the current Olympic break and associated trade freeze prevent the Sharks from trading Skinner until February 22 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. He will be on unconditional waivers for 24 hours.

Future Prospects

Once Skinner clears waivers, any team in the league will have the opportunity to sign him. Despite his recent struggles, his scoring ability may attract interest from teams seeking a veteran forward for a playoff push.
