Sharul Channa: Challenging Stereotypes and Breaking Barriers in Comedy
Singapore-born stand-up comedian Sharul Channa is set to premiere her recent comedy special, Saree, These Are Just Jokes!, in Singapore on March 6th and 7th, coinciding with International Women’s Day. This launch marks a significant milestone in her 15-year comedy career and precedes her largest India tour to date.
A Bold New Special: Saree, These Are Just Jokes!
Channa’s latest show, debuting at MDLR in Cecil Street, builds upon the success of her previous sold-out productions, Saree Not Sorry and Sareeously Not Sorry, which resonated with audiences across Singapore, Asia, and Australia. Saree, These Are Just Jokes! delves into personal anecdotes, cultural observations, and the complexities of modern life.
Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry
Channa openly discusses the challenges faced by women in the comedy world, particularly in a field historically dominated by men. She acknowledges the persistent gender imbalance, noting that women often have to function harder to achieve the same level of recognition as their male counterparts. “If you see the ratio of men to women in the stand-up scene and the number of women who become as substantial as the men, the gap is still huge,” she stated.
The Power of Humor and Authenticity
Despite the obstacles, Channa emphasizes the importance of focusing on one’s craft and using humor as a tool for empowerment. She believes that making people laugh is the key to earning respect and challenging preconceived notions. “Your aim is not to be accepted into someone’s gang. Your aim is to travel on stage and make people laugh. The moment you do that, the room starts respecting you,” she explained. She also highlights the demand for women to support each other rather than competing for limited opportunities.
India Tour Dates
Following the Singapore premiere, Channa will embark on a multi-city tour of India in March and April, including performances in:
