Shamrock Rovers Draw with Shelbourne in Thrilling Premier Division Clash
Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne played out a captivating 2-2 draw in their rearranged SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division match at Tolka Park on Monday night. The champions twice came from behind, with goals from John McGovern and a Dylan Watts penalty cancelling out early strikes from Harry Wood and John Martin.
First-Half Drama at Tolka Park
Shelbourne made a lightning-swift start, taking the lead in the 8th minute through Harry Wood. Wood, finding space on the edge of the area, fired a low shot past Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty. Just five minutes later, Shelbourne doubled their advantage as Wood again played a key role, crossing for John Martin to tap home at the back post.
Shamrock Rovers responded well to going two goals down. They pulled a goal back in the 26th minute when Mise Sobowale’s cross from the right found John McGovern, who scored low past Wessel Speel.
The Hoops completed their comeback in the 32nd minute, earning a penalty when John McGovern was brought down by Wessel Speel. Dylan Watts confidently converted the spot-kick, leveling the score at 2-2 before halftime.
Second-Half Chances and Late Rally
The second half saw Shelbourne create several opportunities to regain the lead. Dan Kelly headed wide from close range in the 53rd minute, and Zeno Ibsen Rossi saw a goal-bound header deflected onto the roof of the net.
Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley introduced a quadruple substitution in the 68th minute, bringing on Jack Byrne, Graham Burke, Michael Noonan, and Adam Brennan. Burke showcased skillful ball retention late in the game, but his shot from the edge of the area sailed over the bar.
Despite both sides pushing for a winner, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Bradley Expresses Displeasure with Sloppy Start
Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley expressed his frustration with his team’s slow start to the match. “We just didn’t start, it was a sloppy start from us. Defensively really poor obviously and we gave them a headstart,” he told RTÉ Sport. RTÉ. He added, “Sloppy – sloppy minds – we weren’t ready to start the game and that’s not acceptable.” Despite the poor start, Bradley was pleased with his team’s response, noting they were the better team after conceding the second goal.
Shelbourne Manager Optimistic
Shelbourne manager Joey O’Brien believes his side is close to turning their fortunes around. He feels his team is just “small percentage points away from ascending the table.”
