Shohei Ohtani Injured Attempting to Steal Second in World Series, Dodgers Hold on for 2-0 Series Lead
The 2024 World Series took a dramatic turn in Game 2 when Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani was injured attempting to steal second base. The incident sent a shockwave through Dodger Stadium, and the game held breath as Ohtani’s fate was uncertain.
Ohtani was thrown out attempting to steal second base to end the bottom of the seventh inning and stayed on the ground in pain. He was holding his left arm, which took the brunt of his weight as he slid into second. Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal later reported that it was a shoulder injury.
The Fox Sports mics picked up Ohtani’s conversation after the injury, with one Japanese-speaking account reporting that the slugger said his left shoulder popped out of its socket.
While Ohtani did not officially leave the game because the inning was over, and he’s the designated hitter, the Dodgers were in a holding pattern as they awaited word on the extent of the injury.
MLB.com’s Juan Toribio reports that Ohtani left Dodger Stadium almost immediately after the game ended.
Following the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided a positive update, telling reporters Ohtani sustained a “little” subluxation and had good results with initial tests.
Dave Roberts says Shohei Ohtani has a “little” subluxation of left shoulder and will undergo testing. But he said the initial strength tests were good and they’ll do more tests, but says early signs seem positive.

The Dodgers held on to defeat the New York Yankees 4-2, taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Despite the victory, the Ohtani injury casts a cloud over the team’s championship aspirations.
The play on which he was injured was only his second attempt of the playoffs, with no successes.
