Shohei Ohtani to Focus on Hitting in WBC, Dodgers Maintain Pitching Roadmap
Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani will participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) as a designated hitter, with the Dodgers prioritizing a careful plan to build up his pitching arm for the MLB season. While Ohtani will contribute to Samurai Japan’s lineup, he will not pitch in the tournament.
Dodgers’ Plan for Ohtani’s Return to the Mound
After recovering from a second Tommy John surgery and limited pitching innings last season, the Dodgers are taking a cautious approach to Ohtani’s return as a two-way player. The team has developed a custom pitching roadmap to ensure his arm is prepared for Opening Day and a potential deep playoff run.
Ohtani recently hit 99 mph during a live session at Camelback Ranch , demonstrating progress in his recovery. He concluded his stay at the Dodgers’ spring training facility before departing for Japan on Sunday or Monday.
Balancing WBC Participation with Pitching Development
Despite not pitching in the WBC, Ohtani will continue his pitching program. The Dodgers plan for him to participate in live bullpen outings during Japan’s off days in the tournament to maintain his arm strength, and conditioning. This will be crucial for his transition back into a full-time pitching role with the Dodgers, potentially including short innings in late March during the Freeway Series.
Ohtani’s Role with Samurai Japan
Although limited to hitting in the WBC, Ohtani is expected to be a central figure for Samurai Japan. At 31, he will be one of the team’s key players as they aim to defend their 2023 WBC championship. He understands the Dodgers’ decision, acknowledging the need to prioritize his long-term health and pitching performance.
“I’ll do everything in my power to make sure the quality and the volume are in a good place,” Ohtani said through an interpreter.
Looking Ahead
The Dodgers’ careful management of Ohtani’s workload reflects their commitment to his long-term success. Balancing his participation in the WBC with a structured pitching program will be essential as he prepares for a full season as a two-way player in 2026.
