Shooting at Delhi Gym Leaves One Dead, Suspects in Custody
A shooting at a gym in Paschim Vihar, Delhi, left one person dead and two others injured early Wednesday, according to local police. The incident occurred around 10:30 PM at the facility, which is part of a fitness chain, though no official link to the Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa has been confirmed, as previously reported.
“The victim, a 28-year-old man, was shot in the chest while using the equipment. The attackers fled the scene, and we are investigating the motive,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Rakesh Khanna, citing a press release. Two suspects were arrested within 12 hours of the incident, though their identities and connection to the victims remain under investigation.
What Happened at the Gym in Delhi?
The shooting took place at a commercial gym located in a densely populated area of Paschim Vihar. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before seeing a man collapse near the entrance. “We heard a loud bang and saw someone fall. The staff tried to help, but the attackers ran away,” said a nearby shopkeeper, who requested anonymity.
The Delhi Fire Department confirmed that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries. The police have not yet released the names of the victims or the suspects, but they stated that the case is being treated as “intentional homicide.”
How Did Authorities Respond?
Delhi Police deployed additional forces to the area following the incident, with officials conducting a door-to-door search for the suspects. A forensic team was also sent to the gym to collect evidence, including bullet casings and surveillance footage.
“We are cooperating with the local authorities to ensure a swift investigation,” said a statement from the Delhi Police. The case has been handed over to the city’s Anti-Terrorism Squad for further scrutiny, though no terrorist links have been established yet.
Why This Incident Matters
This is the second reported shooting in Delhi this month, following a similar incident at a market in West Delhi on June 15. While the motives behind such attacks often remain unclear, experts suggest that urban violence in the capital has been on the rise due to “increased gang activity and unresolved disputes.”
“Gyms and fitness centers are typically safe spaces, so such incidents are particularly alarming,” said Dr. Anjali Sharma, a criminologist at Jawaharlal Nehru University. “The police need to address the root causes of these attacks, including better security infrastructure and community outreach programs.”
What’s Next for the Investigation?
The Delhi Police have not yet disclosed the number of firearms involved in the attack or the exact location of the suspects. However, they confirmed that the gym’s security footage is being analyzed for clues.
“We are reviewing all available evidence and will release more details once the investigation is complete,” said Khanna. Meanwhile, local residents have called for increased police presence in the area, with some demanding stricter gun control measures.
