Simeone Baffled by LaLiga Fixture Continuation Amid Spain’s Devastating Floods
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed his bewilderment over the decision to proceed with Sunday’s LaLiga match against Las Palmas, following the devastating floods that have ravaged Spain.
Two other LaLiga games – Villarreal against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia against Real Madrid – have already been postponed. However, Simeone believes authorities haven’t gone far enough in recognizing the severity of the situation.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Simeone stated at a press conference, when questioned about the fixture.
“What is happening is very hard. The people who went out into the street to help, who with a shovel and their tools try to collaborate, that speaks very well of the country, of the people, and we want to help where we can.
“There are people having a very bad time, it is very sad and they tell us to carry on and here we are, carrying on,” he added.
Atletico’s Home Advantage
Despite the controversy surrounding the fixture, Atletico Madrid carries a strong historical advantage at home against La Palmas. The Rojiblancos have only suffered two defeats in their last 31 home league encounters with the Canary Islanders, winning 16 times and drawing four.
Adding to their confidence, Simeone’s side secured a 4-1 victory over 10-man UE Vic in their Copa del Rey first-round clash on Thursday, rebounding from last Sunday’s 1-0 La Liga defeat to Real Betis.
Las Palmas’ Upward Trajectory
Las Palmas arrives in the Spanish capital in good form, having secured maximum points from their last two league matches.
Simeone acknowledged the challenge posed by Las Palmas and the impact of injuries within his own squad. He is, however, confident in the abilities of those stepping in:
“We have a few injured players. We compensate with these lads who are enthusiastic and eager to show why they are at Atletico de Madrid and we hope that tomorrow we will focus on the importance of the match and that they will lead us to what we want.”
