Rohingya Refugees Land in Indonesia, Six Dead as Numbers Surge

Six Rohingya refugees have died after nearly 100 people arrived by boat in Indonesia’s Aceh province, according to a local fishing community. This latest arrival follows a surge in Rohingya refugees reaching Indonesia’s shores in recent days.

Miftach Tjut Adek, chief of the community, told Reuters that the 96 refugees, including seven children, remain at a local beach in eastern Aceh on Sumatra island. “There is no solution yet, they are still at the beach,” said Miftach.

This incident follows the arrival of around 300 Rohingya in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces last week. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has called on the Indonesian government to ensure the safety of the arriving refugees.

UNHCR is working with local authorities to provide aid to the Rohingya.

Why are Rohingya Fleeing Myanmar?

This influx comes during the annual period between October and April, when seas are calmer, and many Rohingya Muslims undertake perilous journeys by boat from Myanmar to destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Rohingya individuals face immense challenges in Myanmar. Officially categorized as undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh, they are denied citizenship and subject to systematic persecution and violence by the dominant Buddhist population.
