Could a Combined Czech-Slovak Team Rewrite International Hockey?
The 2025 Tournament of Four nations is underway in Montreal, but a familiar question hangs in the air: where are the biggest names? While the absence of Russian players is widely understandable given current global events, the notable omissions of NHL stars like Leon Draisaitl, David Pastrnak, and even Sami Vatanen have cast a shadow over the tournament’s excitement.
Pastrnak, himself missing from the tournament, voiced a sentiment shared by many: a desire for a return to the glory days of a unified Czechoslovakian team. "We used to be one country, we cheer each other and understand each other," he said, suggesting a combined team approach might be more powerful.
Pastrnak’s words have reignited a debate simmering beneath the surface of international hockey: could a re-introduction of a Czech-Slovak team reshape the landscape of major tournaments? While Slovakia currently boasts just seven players in the NHL, they hold 20 players under contract with North American teams— outpacing both Switzerland and Germany. This solid foundation, along with a balanced roster distribution, fuels the argument for a formidable combined force.
Miroslav Novak, former Slovakian NHL player turned sports analyst, sees great potential. "Slovakia has a solid base," he explains. "Our distribution across positions is balanced, particularly on defense, where we boast six NHL-contracted players. While goalkeeping remains a concern, our center position offers a mix of experienced veterans and promising youngsters. We possess the talent to compete, and with the right strategy, a combined Czech-Slovak team could truly dominate international tournaments."
This potential future received a significant boost with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s announcement of a World Cup in 2028, featuring at least eight teams. This tournament, with its focus on superstar matchups, seems tailor-made for a triumphant return of a combined Czech-Slovak squad.
Novak is adamant about the possibilities. "I am incredibly optimistic!" he exclaims. "A World Cup featuring a combined Czech-Slovak squad would be incredibly exciting. It would showcase the best of our combined talent, potentially creating one of the most formidable teams on the ice. This could be our golden prospect to establish ourselves as a dominant force in international hockey."
