World Championship Upheaval: Smith Crashes Out, Doets Steals the Show

The 2023 World Darts Championship kicked off with a bang, delivering plenty of surprises on day one. Reigning champion Michael Smith suffered a shocking early exit, losing 3-2 to Kevin Doets in a thrilling tie-breaker.

Smith’s Struggles Continue

Smith’s reign since winning the coveted title has been turbulent, and the pressure mounted on the two-time runner-up. Doets, determined to avenge a previous loss to Smith, secured his spot in the next round, leaving Smith facing disappointment and a significant drop in the rankings.

Doets’ Redemption

“Last year I won the bull, and he won 3-2. This year, he won the bull, so I thought to myself, ‘I’m gonna win it 3-2.’ But this is the most stressful game I’ve had in my life.

“It was so very tight, but I’m just so happy. To get over the line is amazing. I kept on going, and just to win this game means so much,”” shared Doets, relieved and ecstatic about his victory.

Other Upsets & Wins

Doets’ victory wasn’t the only surprise. Gabriel Clemens, seeded third, bowed out early, losing 3-1 to Rob Owen. Meanwhile, other notable players found their stride. Scott Williams, semi-finalist from last year, began his campaign with a solid 3-1 win over Niko Springer. Welshman Nick Kenny celebrated his return to the Ally Pally stage with a resounding 3-0 victory over Stowe Buntz, culminating with a stunning ‘big fish’ 170 checkout.

Matt Campbell emerged victorious after a five-set thriller against Mensur Suljovic, winning 3-2. Callan Rydz showcased exceptional form, producing the tournament’s highest average of 107.06 as he comfortably defeated Romeo Grbavac 3-0. Lok Yin Lee, representing Hong Kong, pulled off a surprising 3-1 victory over Chris Landman.
