snapchat Revives Classic 2D Bitmoji

Snap Inc. is responding to user demand and bringing back the original 2D Bitmoji experience for Snapchat+ subscribers (over 16 million!). A new Comic Bitmoji setting is rolling out now. This change comes after important feedback, including a Change.org petition with nearly 100,000 signatures.

“Comic Bitmoji brings back the charm of classic avatars, while keeping all the benefits of today’s 3D infrastructure,” Snap announced. Read the full announcement here. Subscribers can now view all bitmoji avatars in the 2D style and send stickers with the classic look.

This move represents a partial walk-back from Snap’s 2023 decision to switch entirely to 3D avatars. The 3D update offered more customization options for body types, hairstyles, and makeup. However, manny users missed the original, simpler 2D style.

According to Engadget, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel even signed the petition! This shows the company is listening to its users. Implementing the feature wasn’t simple. Developers had to adjust proportions, shading, and outlines to ensure animations and expressions worked correctly in 2D.
