In August, researchers from Portugal published a literature review analyzing 17 studies involving more than 61,000 participants – primarily women – to examine the impact of specific foods and nutrients on hair health, a concern affecting billions worldwide. They noted that approximately 3.3 billion people globally might experience some form of hair loss, although this number “may even be an underestimate, as it does not account for other forms of alopecia or temporary hair loss.”

The team found that high consumption of sugary drinks, like soda, was associated with increased hair loss.Alcohol consumption also appeared to play a role.

However, it wasn’t all bad news. The review also highlighted several nutrients and food groups that promote hair health. Vitamin D, iron, and protein were all linked to stronger, healthier hair. Interestingly, high doses of vitamin A were found to potentially *worsen* certain types of alopecia.
