Dallas Singer Shot on Stage After Performance, Suspect Arrested
A Dallas singer was shot on stage after finishing a performance over the weekend, leading to the arrest of a woman in the crowd, according to authorities. The incident occurred at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) in downtown Dallas Saturday night.
The Shooting
Jada Arnell Thomas, 26, was signing autographs on stage after her performance when a gunshot rang out. According to police, another 26-year-old woman, Micah Williams, fired from the crowd and was subsequently arrested. Williams faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police have not yet confirmed whether the two women knew each other.
Texas radio station WBAP, citing police information, reported that Williams “apparently suffering a mental health episode” when she shot Thomas. However, other media outlets indicate that police have not released further details about a possible motive.
Williams was taken to Dallas County Jail where she is being held on a $200,000 bond. Police retrieved the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.
Singer’s Condition and TBAAL Response
First responders took Thomas to a local hospital. Curtis King, the founder of TBAAL, shared on Facebook that Thomas is expected to recover. King described witnessing the shooting as “unreal” in an interview with KXAS, a local news outlet.
King and other TBAAL staff members followed Williams outside after the shooting and called 911.
Mr. King also announced implemented security changes, including amplifying screening processes and reducing entry points, to enhance safety at future events. “For 48 years, TBAAL has proudly maintained a tradition of safe, family-oriented events and a welcoming environment,” King stated. “As we continue forward, our mission to enrich the community through the arts remains unwavering.”
