South Island Temperatures to Plummet as Cold Front Moves North

A sharp temperature drop is forecast for much of the South Island, New Zealand, as a cold front from the Southern Ocean moves northward. After experiencing warm, summery conditions on Sunday, residents should prepare for significantly cooler weather starting Monday.

Temperature Shift and Heavy Rain Watches

MetService meteorologist Katie Lyons explained that the cold front will spread across the South Island today and tonight, bringing not only rain but also a substantial decrease in temperatures. A yellow heavy rain watch is currently in place for Fiordland about and north of Dusky Sound until 9pm tonight, and for Southland until 7pm.

Blenheim reached a high of 28C (82°F) on Sunday, while Christchurch experienced 26C (79°F). However, Monday’s forecast highs are considerably lower, with Christchurch expected to reach only 17C (63°F) and Blenheim 15C (59°F). Invercargill and Timaru are also forecast to see highs around 14C or 15C (57-59°F).

Duration and North Island Impact

The colder temperatures are expected to last for approximately two to three days before returning to more typical autumn averages in the low 20s Celsius (around 68-77°F). The cold front is also expected to affect parts of the North Island’s east coast, including Napier, Hastings, and Gisborne, but with reduced intensity.

“It’ll lose a bit of steam as it does — which is always the way with these cold fronts from the Southern Ocean, they lose their punch a bit,” Lyons said. Seesawing temperatures are common during autumn in New Zealand.

Ongoing Monitoring of Tropical Low

Forecasters are also monitoring a developing tropical low north of New Zealand, which could bring unsettled weather to the upper North Island early next week. While it’s too early to determine the exact path and strength of the low, it could brush the top of the North Island or move further south towards Auckland and the Bay of Plenty between Tuesday and Thursday. MetService is continuing to monitor the situation closely.
