Amnesty International Condemns Death Penalty Sought for Former South korean President

Seoul, South Korea – Amnesty International has strongly condemned the pursuit of the death penalty against former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faces prosecution for imposing martial law in December 2024. The organization argues that seeking capital punishment represents a regression in the pursuit of justice and human rights.

Chiara Sangiorgio, representing Amnesty International, stated, “No one is above the law, including a former president, but seeking the death penalty is a step backward. The death penalty is an inherently cruel, inhuman and irreversible punishment that has no place in a justice system that claims too respect human rights.”

The controversy stems from president Yoon’s declaration of martial law in December 2024, a move that triggered widespread protests and a forceful response from lawmakers. members of the National Assembly challenged the order, ultimately voting to lift the martial law within hours of its implementation. This led to Yoon’s subsequent impeachment and removal from office by the Constitutional Court, followed by criminal charges alleging insurrection.

Amnesty International emphasizes that while accountability for actions that endanger human rights is crucial, the submission of the death penalty is counterproductive.”Yoon’s imposition of martial law in December 2024 placed fundamental human rights at risk and has prompted prosecutors to seek his execution. While accountability is essential, pursuing the death penalty undermines the very principles of rights and human dignity that the rule of law is meant to protect,” Sangiorgio explained.

The organization further asserts that South Korea,as a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, should actively work towards the complete abolition of the death penalty. Amnesty International maintains its unconditional opposition to capital punishment in all circumstances, advocating for a justice system centered on respect for human dignity and the preservation of life.
