Spokane Apple Tree Inn Homicide: Second Suspect Charged, One Suspect Killed in Confrontation with Police
Spokane, Washington – A second suspect has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of 41-year-old Adam Stallings at the Apple Tree Inn on Sunday night. Simultaneously, a suspect believed to be involved in the homicide was shot and killed by police early Wednesday morning after a standoff, according to reports from the Spokane Police Department.
Second Suspect Charged
Jonathan Woodcock, 27, made his first court appearance on Wednesday and was charged with second-degree murder for his role in Stallings’ death. Court documents indicate his bond has been set at $1 million.
Details of the Stabbing
According to a witness statement obtained by police, Stallings was selling drugs from his room at the Apple Tree Inn, located at 9508 N. Division St., and had been visited by multiple individuals. The witness, who was in the shower at the time of the attack, reported hearing a commotion and discovering Stallings being attacked by two men, one of whom was armed with a shotgun.
Police Shooting and Suspect Death
Police identified a suspect and located him at a residence in the 1800 block of West Carlisle Avenue on Tuesday evening. The Spokesman-Review reports that the suspect was armed and uncooperative with the Spokane Police Hostage Negotiation Team. After attempting to breach the police perimeter although carrying what appeared to be a long gun, the suspect was shot by officers around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Spokane Independent Investigative Response team is investigating the shooting, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative abandon.
Investigation and Evidence
Investigators used security footage and an Automated License Plate Reader (Flock) system to track Woodcock’s vehicle, leading to his arrest. Fox 28 Spokane details how the license plate was traced back to Woodcock as he drove towards Ellensburg.
School Notification
Audubon Elementary, located near the scene of the police shooting, sent an email to parents and staff Wednesday morning informing them of the police activity and assuring them there was no danger to students or families. The corner of Carlisle and Elm was temporarily closed.
Ongoing Investigation
The name of the suspect killed by police will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation into the Apple Tree Inn homicide remains ongoing.
