Verizon and Ericsson Expand RAN Automation Partnership
Verizon and Ericsson are expanding their long-standing partnership to deploy autonomous networks and integrate artificial intelligence into radio access networks in the United States. The initiative brings a nationwide rollout of the Ericsson Intelligent Controller to American markets, opening the door for native AI applications designed by both Ericsson and Verizon.
The nationwide deployment of the controller platform is scheduled to take place later this year. Verizon intends to test and run proprietary applications alongside vendor-built software to boost overall operational efficiency and network performance.
The possibility for Verizon to develop its own rApps on this open platform will help us take another step forward in network automation as we prepare for 6G,
said Matt Butz, vice president of network planning at Verizon.
Deploying Intelligent Applications Across 4G and 5G Infrastructures
The deployment centers on the Ericsson Intelligent Controller, which serves as a core component of the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform. This management platform supports open environments spanning multiple vendors and technologies, covering all 4G and 5G radio access networks alongside Ericsson core architectures.
Verizon’s deployment pipeline features specific rApps. These native AI tools include the Cell Anomaly Detector, the Root Cause Explainer, and the Anomaly General Optimizer. Each application runs on this open platform.
