Squid Game Season 2 Earns Golden Globe Nomination Despite Unseen Footage
The anticipation for Squid Game season 2 is already through the roof, and it just landed a major accolade before a single episode has even aired. The Netflix drama received a nomination for Best Drama Series at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards.
The nomination, announced on Monday, places Squid Game alongside some heavy hitters like The Day of the Jackal (Peacock), The Diplomat (Netflix), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Prime Video), Shogun (FX/Hulu), and Slow Horses (Apple TV+). The twist, however, is that the majority of these shows have already debuted, while Squid Game season two remains firmly under wraps until its December 26th release date.
While it’s not entirely unheard of for the Golden Globes to nominate projects that haven’t premiered yet (Jamie Foxx’s stand-up special What Had Happened Was also received a nod), this typically happens more frequently with films than television series.
To be eligible for a 2025 Golden Globe, a show must have premiered in 2024 and submitted episodes to the voting body by November 4th. Squid Game’s release date technically falls within this window, but late December releases aren’t common. However, Squid Game boasts a passionate fanbase and Netflix often capitalizes on holiday releases, especially with highly anticipated projects. The timing strategically aligns with the debut of Netflix’s NFL games, which stream live on Christmas Day, creating a kickoff of sorts for the new season.
“I was inspired by the sheer fact that everywhere you turn, people are drawing lines, whether it’s by generation, class, religion, ethnicity or race,” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said. “I wanted to tell a story about how the different choices we make create conflicts among us and to open up a conversation about whether there is a way to move toward a direction where we can overcome these divisions.”
