St. Gallen Migration Office Seeks Missing Resident
The Migration Office of the Canton of St. Gallen has issued a formal notice to Markus Gerling, a German national born on July 8, 1984, signaling the potential non-renewal of his EU/EFTA residence permit. Authorities have been unable to establish Mr. Gerling’s current place of residence, forcing the use of an official public notice (eAmtsblatt) to reach him.
A July 2026 Deadline for Response
Under Article 17, paragraph 1 of the Law on Administrative Jurisdiction (Verwaltungsrechtspflegegesetz, VRP), Mr. Gerling retains the right to challenge the Migration Office’s intent to deny his permit extension. He must submit a written response by July 24, 2026.
The stakes are clear: should the office receive no statement by the deadline, Article 17, paragraph 2 of the VRP allows the Migration Office to issue a final decision based solely on the existing case files.
Residency Requirements Under Scrutiny
By declaring Mr. Gerling’s whereabouts as "unknown," the state has turned to public notification as the final legal method to ensure he is informed of the pending action.
Finality of Administrative Gazettes
Once the clock runs out, the authority will move to issue a binding decision based strictly on the documentation on hand.
