Rick Pitino’s Intense Coaching Style: A Former Assistant Reflects
The college basketball world recently witnessed the fallout of a significant loss for St. John’s, but for Villanova head coach Kevin Willard, the result brought back memories of a demanding past under Red Storm coach Rick Pitino. Following Villanova’s 89-57 defeat to St. John’s on February 28, 2026, Willard openly discussed the pressures of working for Pitino, describing the experience as “miserable” and even attributing his baldness to the stress.
A History of Intensity
Willard’s relationship with Pitino spans over two decades, beginning as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics from 1997-2001 and continuing at Louisville from 2001-2007. He described a climate of constant pressure, where the fear of being fired was ever-present. “You fear for your life every day,” Willard stated, adding that Pitino’s intensity hasn’t diminished with age, potentially even increasing as he’s turn into “more of a cranky old [expletive].”
The Aftermath of a Loss
Willard’s comments came after St. John’s suffered a 72-40 loss to UConn on February 26, 2026, their most lopsided defeat against the Huskies in program history. He speculated on the atmosphere within St. John’s practices following such a loss, drawing from his own experiences. He highlighted Pitino’s meticulous nature and ability to pinpoint weaknesses, even after extensive preparation. “He walks into the facility at 6:30 and you’ve been there since 5:30 thinking you have everything right and he comes in and asks you the one question you don’t know,” Willard explained.
A Public Acknowledgement
Despite his candid assessment, Willard publicly expressed gratitude for Pitino’s mentorship. In a post on social media, Willard acknowledged that Pitino gave him his first coaching opportunity and that he learned a tremendous amount during their ten years together. He praised Pitino’s competitiveness and energy, attributing his success – including 900+ wins and national championships – to his unparalleled intensity.
St. John’s Response and Current Standing
St. John’s responded to their loss against UConn with a decisive 32-point victory over Villanova, their largest margin of victory against the Wildcats ever. Senior forward/center Zuby Ejiofor recorded a triple-double in the win, with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Pitino, however, took an unconventional approach, choosing not to review the game tape from the UConn loss – a first in his three years at St. John’s. Instead, he drew upon past experiences to motivate his team.
As of March 2, 2026, St. John’s holds a 16-2 record in conference play, keeping pace with UConn (17-2) for the top spot in the Considerable East standings. Both teams have crucial games remaining, with the possibility of sharing the conference’s regular season title.
