Storm Therese Impacts La Gomera: Landslides, Closures and Emergency Measures
La Gomera is currently grappling with the effects of Storm Therese, which has triggered landslides, road closures, and the activation of the island’s emergency plan. The Cabildo de La Gomera is coordinating response efforts as the storm continues to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Landslides and Road Closures
Since Friday afternoon, the Coordinating Center for Insular Operations (CECOPIN) has responded to approximately twenty incidents related to landslides, falling branches, and minor flooding. Significant landslides have been reported on the GM-1 road in the areas of Tamargada and Macayo (Vallehermoso), Las Orijamas and Vueltas (Valle Gran Rey), and near the El Rejo tunnel. The GM-2 road has also experienced landslides at the access to San Sebastián, with falling branches reported along its route through Garajonay National Park. The CV-17 road between Epina and Alojera has been affected by fallen trees and rocks.
The road between Ayacata and Tejeda is currently closed due to a significant rockfall, which created a large crack in the pavement.
As a precautionary measure, the CV-14 road connecting the GM-1 and GM-2, along with the facilities of the Vallehermoso Botanical Garden, have been closed. Interpretation centers Casa de la Miel de Palma (Alojera, Vallehermoso) and Cheese and Grazing (Alajeró) are also closed to the public.
Island-Wide Restrictions and Safety Measures
The Cabildo de La Gomera has activated the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN), leading to the closure of the island’s network of trails, forest tracks, and recreational areas, including those within Garajonay National Park. Local authorities have been advised to suspend all outdoor events and public gatherings.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from areas prone to landslides and falling debris. Caution is also advised along the coastline due to rough seas.
Weather Forecast and Ongoing Risks
The weather forecast predicts cloudy skies with persistent, potentially heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in the southern half and northern midlands of the island. Wind speeds are expected to be moderate to strong from the southwest, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h in higher elevations and on the southeast and northwest slopes.
Emergency Contact Information
The Cabildo of La Gomera emphasizes the importance of staying informed through official channels and advises contacting the emergency services at 112 or CECOPIN at 922 14 15 01 in case of any risk situation.
Coordination of Emergency Services
Response efforts are being coordinated by CECOPIN with the cooperation of State security forces, Civil Defense, Anaga Emergency Aid (AEA), Volunteer Firefighters from Valle Gran Rey and La Gomera, the SSG Foundation, highway maintenance crews, the Environment Unit, and local authorities.
