Strasbourg Port Launches Ambitious Plan to Cut Carbon Emissions by 81% by 2050

The Port of Strasbourg, along with the Group of Users of the Port of Strasbourg (GUP) and R-PAS, has officially launched “CLES 2050,” a project aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions in the area. The initiative, part of the national ZIBaC – France 2030 program, seeks to define a decarbonization trajectory for the industrial and port zone of Strasbourg, targeting an 81% reduction in industrial emissions by 2050.

The area surrounding the port, home to 400 companies and 10,000 jobs, has already set a goal to decrease its CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050. CLES 2050 represents a key step in achieving this objective, beginning with a comprehensive assessment of current emissions.

Project Details and Funding

CLES 2050 received the ZIBaC designation in January 2024 and benefits from a total funding of €1.076 million, with 50% of the funding provided by the ADEME (French Agency for Ecological Transition). The project is coordinated by the Port of Strasbourg, in collaboration with GUP and R-PAS.

Four Key Areas of Focus

The project is structured around four main areas:

  • Energy and Industrial Processes: Focusing on improving energy efficiency and transitioning to cleaner energy sources within industrial operations.
  • Logistics: Optimizing transportation and logistics to reduce carbon footprint.
  • Materials and Resources: Promoting the circular economy and sustainable resource management.
  • Water Management: Implementing sustainable water management practices.

Study and Implementation

The project will involve a two-year study conducted by the Inddigo group. This study will lay the groundwork for future investments within the France 2030 program. CLES 2050 builds upon the existing CLES initiative, which began in 2013, and leverages the principles of industrial ecology to foster collaboration and innovation among local businesses.

A Collaborative Effort

CLES 2050 aims to accelerate the energy transition of the region and secure its industrial future through shared governance, methodological support, and co-funded studies. The initiative too extends to the port areas of Marckolsheim and Lauterbourg, with funding from the Port of Strasbourg.

As a pioneer in industrial ecology since 2013, the Port of Strasbourg is fostering a collective dynamic, making the port area a leading territory for ecological initiatives.
