“Streaming Time” Exhibition Opens at Riga Castle, Offering a New Perspective on Latvian History
Riga Castle is once again open to the public with the launch of “Streaming Time,” a contemporary exhibition dedicated to the history of Latvia. The exhibition, which opened on March 21, 2026, presents a unique blend of historical artifacts and engaging digital content, designed to tell the story of Latvia and its people from ancient times to the present day.
A Journey Through 12,500 Years of History
Occupying 620 square meters on the 4th floor of Riga Castle, “Streaming Time” divides Latvian history into nine distinct themes: Inventive Humans, People of the Hillforts, City Walls Unite, Together in the Congregation, Born into One’s Class, Power of the Movement, Becoming a Citizen, Totalitarian Stranglehold, and Return to Europe.
The exhibition’s design features a series of sculptural displays, each representing a theme, and arranged to resemble a winding river of time, allowing visitors to move through the narrative of Latvian history. The concept highlights the simultaneous existence of different eras and cultural elements within Latvia’s landscape – from ancient hillforts to Baroque castles.
Exploring Themes of Identity and Belonging
“Streaming Time” delves into the core concepts of identity and belonging, prompting visitors to consider their connection to larger communities – families, social classes, congregations, and movements – and how these affiliations have evolved over time. The exhibition asks questions about what unites individuals within society and how the meaning of belonging has changed throughout Latvian history.
Behind the Exhibition
The exhibition was created by researchers, curators, and restorers from the Latvian National Museum of History, in collaboration with several partners. Architect Didzis Jaunzems led the design process through SIA “DJA,” while SIA “SOLAVI” and SIA “AD PRODUCTION” were responsible for the production, installation, and multimedia development.
