Styria Reports Increase in Violence Against Women, Highlights Gender Statistics
The Styrian provincial government recently presented its report, “Styria – Equality in Numbers 2025,” revealing key demographic data and a concerning rise in violence against women. The report, presented by Deputy Governor Manuela Khom alongside Alexandra Nagl and Head of Statistics Martin Mayer, provides a comprehensive overview of gender equality in the region.
Key Findings from the Report
The approximately 200-page report analyzes various aspects of life for women and men in Styria, aiming to showcase progress while identifying areas needing further attention. A particularly alarming finding is the documented increase in violence against women, prompting calls for more targeted preventative measures.
Population Demographics
The report indicates that women constitute a slight majority of the population in Styria, accounting for 50.6 percent. This is largely attributed to women’s longer life expectancy, with an average lifespan of 84.8 years compared to 79.9 years for men. This difference is especially pronounced in older age groups, where women over 90 outnumber men by more than two to one.
Government Response and Future Initiatives
Deputy Governor Manuela Khom, a member of the European Committee of the Regions representing Austria [1], emphasized the importance of the report as a basis for political decision-making and the promotion of equality. She stated the need for continuous efforts and targeted initiatives to address ongoing challenges and achieve greater gender equality in Styria. [3]
The data presented is intended to inform the development of strategies to combat violence against women and promote overall equality between genders in the region.
