Super Mario 64 Speedrunning Community Revitalized by $8,000 Bounty from Record Holder Suigi

The world of Super Mario 64 speedrunning is experiencing a surge of renewed competition thanks to an unprecedented initiative by current world record holder, Suigi. Having achieved a historic feat by simultaneously holding the world records in all five main categories of the game, Suigi has put up a substantial cash prize to incentivize others to break his times.

Suigi’s Historic Domination

In November 2024, Suigi cemented his place in speedrunning history by becoming the first person to hold the world records in all five major Super Mario 64 categories: 0 Star, 1 Star, 16 Star, 70 Star, and 120 Star. This accomplishment, described as arguably the greatest achievement in videogame speedrun history, has been largely unchallenged since.

The five categories are defined by the number of stars collected before defeating Bowser, with each requiring distinct skills and strategies. According to records, Suigi has consistently improved upon his own times, remaining at the top of the leaderboards.

A Bounty to Spark Competition

Recognizing a potential stagnation within the community, Suigi initiated a bounty system to reignite the competitive spirit. “This community is bored and needs change,” Suigi stated in a recent YouTube video. “We need another exciting record to finally break the five-for-five curse. And I know it’s a curse. These records aren’t that great. They’re not invincible. There’s just some mental barriers that need to be broken through and broken.”

Suigi initially contributed $1,000 of his own money, which was then supplemented by donations from fellow runners and community members. As of February 18, 2026, the prize pool has reached $7,944 and is expected to exceed $10,000.

Suigi Forfeits Eligibility for His Own Bounty

The bounty is open to any player who can beat one of Suigi’s five world records using original Nintendo 64 (N64) hardware. However, Suigi himself is explicitly ineligible to claim the prize. He recently set a new world record in the 70 Star category but voluntarily disqualified himself from competing for the reward.

Expressing his frustration playfully on Bluesky, Suigi lamented, “THE $7000 DOLLAR 70 STAR WORLD RECORD… IF ONLY I WAS ELIGIBLE TO CLAIM MY OWN BOUNTY.” This gesture underscores Suigi’s commitment to fostering a more competitive environment within the Super Mario 64 speedrunning community.
