Championship Round-Up: Sunderland Extend Lead at the Top
Sunderland strengthened their position at the top of the Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday. The Black Cats now boast a three-point lead over second-placed Burnley, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Hull City.
Sunderland’s Narrow Win
Chris Rigg opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 55th minute, but Luton’s Elijah Adebayo quickly levelled the scores just eight minutes later. However, Romaine Mundle’s stunning strike three minutes after Adebayo’s goal secured all three points for the visitors.
Burnley’s Unbeaten Streak Continues
Burnley extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches with a 1-1 draw against Hull City. Xavier Simons’ deflected shot just before half-time gave the Tigers the lead, ending Burnley’s impressive run of 453 minutes without conceding a goal. Zian Flemming headed in an equaliser in the 77th minute to secure a point for the Clarets.
Sheffield United Slip Further Behind
Sheffield United’s hopes of catching Sunderland suffered a setback with a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Emmanuel Latte Lath’s header in the 80th minute secured a first win in three matches for Boro, leaving the Blades six points adrift of the leaders.
West Brom Climb the Table
West Brom moved above Sheffield United into fourth place on goal difference after a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers.
Plymouth’s Away Struggles Continue
Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth remain winless on the road this season after a 1-0 defeat at Millwall. Romain Esse’s first-half goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.
