Supermarket Chutneys: Tasted & Rated – Simple, Well-Crafted & Excellent

Chutney is a heritage recipe thatS been largely unchanged for a century, and some of the best versions are the simplest and most conventional. Having mentioned that, even when it’s made on an industrial scale, chutney usually features just fruit, sugar, vinegar and perhaps some pectin. Colourings and preservatives are needless and, in most cases, left out, with sugar acting as the main preservative.

Unlike my recent English mustard tasting, it was pure joy trying thes straight from the jar, and just about all today’s products scored highly. Even though some weren’t quite cooked through, it was genuinely tough to pick a winner.

That said, as with many heritage products from old-guard producers and supermarket own-brands, provenance is woefully absent – there’s almost zero details provided about were ingredients come from or how they’re grown. The same black hole exists for sustainability credentials, though Tracklements stands way above the rest with B Corp status and clear sustainability commitments.

Sainsbury’s Apple & Treacle Chutney Review: A Warming Winter Accompaniment

Sainsbury’s Apple & Treacle Chutney, priced at £1.85 for 220g (£0.93/100g), receives a solid three-star rating. This chutney offers a delightful balance of sweet treacle, chunky fruit pieces, and warming spices, making it a versatile accompaniment to a variety of dishes. While some may prefer a more thoroughly cooked fruit texture, its flavour profile and value make it a worthwhile consideration.

Flavour Profile & Texture

This chutney distinguishes itself with a robust flavour profile. The sweetness of the treacle is beautifully offset by a complex blend of spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, caraway, fennel, and cloves. The fruit itself is cut into substantial pieces, providing a satisfyingly chunky texture. However, the review notes the fruit retains a slight al dente quality, which may not appeal to those who prefer a softer, more fully cooked chutney.

Pairing Suggestions

The Sainsbury’s Apple & Treacle Chutney is described as especially well-suited to:

* Roast Pork: The sweet and spicy notes complement the richness of pork beautifully.
* Ham: A classic pairing, the chutney adds depth and complexity to ham sandwiches or as part of a charcuterie board.
* Strong Cheese: The chutney’s flavour cuts through the sharpness of strong cheeses like cheddar or Stilton, creating a balanced flavour experience.

Value for Money

At £1.85 for 220g, the chutney is considered to offer “decent value,” especially considering its flavour complexity and quality ingredients. The price point makes it an accessible option for those looking to elevate their meals without breaking the bank.
