Surge in Purchases of Rooftop Solar Panels, Says SEAI
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has reported a notable increase in the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across Irish homes, driven by growing homeowner interest in renewable energy and available financial supports.
According to SEAI, the Solar Electricity Grant scheme – part of the government’s Microgeneration Support Scheme – has seen rising uptake as households seek to reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions through self-generation of power.
SEAI notes that a typical home solar PV system sized at 20 square metres can generate meaningful levels of electricity on clear sunny days, contributing to household energy needs.
The authority also highlights that solar energy systems, including both PV and thermal technologies, require proper installation and, in some cases, additional components such as novel water tanks for thermal setups. Regular maintenance, including glycol replacement in solar thermal systems, is necessary to ensure long-term performance and efficiency.
Even as SEAI’s data reflects growing domestic adoption of solar technology in Ireland, broader trends indicate solar power’s expanding role in global energy markets. In the United States, solar capacity has consistently accounted for approximately half of all new electricity generation capacity added annually in recent years, according to industry analysis.
These developments underscore a shifting energy landscape where rooftop solar is becoming an increasingly accessible and practical option for homeowners aiming to generate their own clean electricity.
