## A Minnesota Girl’s Scars and the Scars on Community Safety
A six-year-old girl named Zophiana Vera-Winter is navigating a long road to recovery after suffering multiple injuries in a brutal dog attack in January. The incident, which occurred at the home of 44-year-old Katrina Marie Davis in Ghent, Minnesota, has left Zophiana with scars, both physical and emotional.
Three of Davis’ pit bulls attacked Zophiana while she was under the care of a babysitter. The little girl underwent multiple surgeries for bites to her arms, legs, and ear.
While Zophiana’s strength and resilience shine through – she has returned to school and continues to show remarkable progress – the ordeal has deeply impacted her family. Her mother, Casey Winter, explained the toll the attack has taken, stressing the emotional struggles her daughter and she face. “My daughter who saw it, she struggles a lot with it. I struggle with it a lot,” Winter shared candidly. The experience has also diminished her ability to trust babysitters.
The tragedy has spurred legal action. Davis faces misdemeanor charges of “considerable bodily harm caused by a dog” in Lyon County District Court. Additionally, the city of Minneota has taken custody of two of Davis’s dogs, initiating euthanasia proceedings due to their prior designation as “hazardous.” A third dog, deemed dangerous by the city of Ghent, remains in kennel custody.
This incident isn’t Davis’s first brush with the law regarding her dogs. Court records reveal a history of misdemeanor convictions for dogs running at large in 2021 and 2022. In one instance, her dogs injured another dog, resulting in over $700 in veterinary bills. A 2022 civil suit led to a court order authorizing law enforcement to euthanize the dogs involved. Importantly, Davis has two additional open court cases: one for threats of violence and disorderly conduct against the Lyon County administrator, and another concerning a petition for civil commitment due to mental illness.
The severity of the attack and Davis’s history with dog-related incidents raise crucial questions about community safety and legal frameworks.
