Explore the Swabian Alb with a New Puzzle-Based Card Game
As spring arrives, a new card game, “Swabian Alb – 50 puzzles with excursion tips,” offers a unique way to discover the natural and cultural treasures of the Swabian Alb region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Published by Meßkircher Gmeiner-Verlag, the game combines entertainment with educational insights, encouraging players to explore the area in person.
A Journey Through the Swabian Alb
The game features 50 cards, each presenting a different location within the Swabian Alb and its surrounding areas, stretching from Tuttlingen in the southwest to Ellwangen in the northeast . Players are challenged with a puzzle question related to each location. The reverse side of the card reveals the answer along with helpful tips for visiting the site.
Puzzles and Local Landmarks
One card focuses on Burladingen-Salmendingen in the Zollernalbkreis, highlighting the “mysterious Märzensee” (Märzenbronnen). The puzzle challenges players to understand why the lake isn’t always visible, as it only appears after significant rainfall or snowmelt. The Märzensee is a natural phenomenon that occurs infrequently.
Uncovering Regional Mysteries
Another puzzle delves into the connection between the Danube and Rhine rivers. The game references a discovery made 150 years ago when a geologist traced the flow of water from a seepage of the Danube near Tuttlingen, which eventually appeared in the Aach river and then flowed into the Rhine.
Beyond Natural Wonders
The game also explores historical and cultural aspects of the Swabian Alb. Puzzles cover topics such as the castles in the region, including a question about a Venetian mirror once preserved in butter at Sigmaringen Castle, and a “spectacular liberation operation” that occurred at Lichtenstein Castle in 2009. The game also features questions about the transhumance sheep farms and the continued presence of former military training areas near Münsingen.
A Gateway to Real-World Exploration
While the game offers a fun and engaging way to learn about the Swabian Alb, the ultimate goal is to inspire players to experience the region firsthand. The game encourages exploration and discovery of the diverse landscapes and cultural heritage of this German mountain range.
