Irish Family Accused of Restaurant Scam in Sydney
A family visiting Sydney, Australia, from Ireland has been accused of attempting to defraud a restaurant out of a $600 bill by allegedly planting a hair on a plate. The incident, which occurred at Pony in The Rocks, has prompted warnings to hospitality venues to remain vigilant against similar scams.
The Alleged Scam
According to reports, the family ordered high-value items, including a 1.8 kg tomahawk steak, along with entrees and drinks at Pony restaurant. Staff allege that after finishing their meal, a man in the group was observed on CCTV reaching under his arm, retrieving a hair, and placing it on his plate. The family then reportedly complained about finding a hair in the food and refused to pay the bill.
Neil Nolan, the kitchen manager at Pony, stated he had never encountered such a tactic in his two decades of experience. “I’ve never seen this ever before. Like, this was another level of trying to scam,” Nolan told 7NEWS.
Escalation and Resolution
The man reportedly became agitated, raising his voice and refusing to pay any portion of the bill. His wife allegedly became distressed, and the situation drew attention from other diners. Staff questioned the origin of the hair, noting it was blonde, even as all kitchen staff had different hair colors.
Concerned about disrupting other patrons, the restaurant management ultimately waived the $600 bill to resolve the confrontation.
Industry Warning
The incident has led to warnings being issued to restaurants across Sydney to be aware of potential scams. Hospitality venues are being urged to remain vigilant and review their CCTV footage for any suspicious activity.
