Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race: Challenging,But Safer conditions Expected
The Sydney to Hobart yacht race is set to be a tough one. Expect cold, wet, and bumpy conditions, but thankfully, a repeat of last year’s tragically fatal weather isn’t in the forecast. This comes as the rest of Australia braces for a varied christmas period, including cyclone threats and bushfire danger in the west.
Race organizers briefed competitors on Wednesday, predicting strong southerly winds up to 25 knots promptly after the 129 starters leave Sydney heads on Boxing Day. it won’t be pleasant.”It’s going to be cold, wet and bumpy, people will get seasick,” stated race committee chairman, Lee Goddard.

Fortunately, conditions are expected to improve slightly. Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) explained on Thursday that winds will ease along the New South Wales and Tasmanian coasts on Saturday and Sunday.”It will still be fresh at times, but gradually we’ll see them easing back along the east coast,” she said.
These upwind conditions will likely lead to a close finish. However, don’t anticipate any record-breaking times this year. The conditions are a stark contrast to the challenging downwind conditions of the previous race, which contributed to the dangerous circumstances faced by competitors.
