Syria’s New Leadership: Justice, Peace, and a Call for Return
After decades of brutal rule, Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad has been ousted, ushering in a new era marked by promises of justice, religious tolerance, and a return to normalcy for millions displaced by the conflict.
The Islamist-led alliance, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), brought an end to Assad’s regime after a swift and decisive offensive. Syrians across the country and around the world celebrated, marking the end of an era characterized by fear and oppression.
Rebuilding Trust: Guaranteeing Rights and Justice
Syria’s new leadership, headed by transitional Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, has pledged to guarantee the rights of all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation. Bashir, speaking to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, emphasized that Syria’s Islamic identity would ensure the protection of all sects.
“Precisely because we are Islamic, we will guarantee the rights of all people and all sects in Syria,” Bashir stated.
HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, now using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa, echoed this commitment, vowing to bring those responsible for torture to justice.
“We will not pardon those involved in torturing detainees,” he declared, urging countries to extradite any perpetrators.
Thousands of families, desperate for closure, flocked to Damascus’s hospitals, seeking information about loved ones disappeared years ago by the Assad regime.
A New Beginning: Challenges and Hope
While Syrians cautiously embrace this new chapter, challenges remain. Shopkeeper Ramadan Dali, from Aleppo, expressed cautious optimism, stating, “We are starting to feel safe.”
However, others, like Juman Khilaly, highlighted concerns about the immediate future. “There is still a lot of uncertainty,” she said, citing concerns over education, soaring prices, and the overall stability.
The international community has expressed cautious support for a smooth transition of power. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed the organization’s commitment to aiding Syria in this process.
Looking Ahead: Global Response and Uncertainty
Western governments, including Germany and France, have urged restraint from foreign powers, particularly regarding military intervention in Syria. Meanwhile, Qatar has pledged to reopen its embassy in Damascus.
The future of Syria remains uncertain. The fall of Assad marks a pivotal moment, but the road to rebuilding a stable and prosperous nation will be long and arduous.
