The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, has been dismissed from his post. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 29, 2025.

“I have decided to dismiss Valerii Zaluzhnyi,” Zelenskyy stated.”I thanked him for his service.”

The President did not instantly name a successor. Further details are expected to be released shortly.

This decision comes amid reports of growing tensions between Zelenskyy and Zaluzhnyi over strategy and personnel decisions in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Analysts suggest differing views on mobilization and battlefield tactics contributed to the change in leadership.

Zaluzhnyi has been a prominent figure in Ukraine’s defence efforts since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, widely credited with orchestrating the initial successful defense of Kyiv and subsequent counteroffensives. His dismissal marks a notable shift in Ukraine’s military leadership.
