Taiwan Resident Claims Hair Loss From Stinky Tofu Odor, Sparks Investigation
A resident of Taipei, Taiwan, has claimed to have experienced significant hair loss due to stress induced by the strong odor emanating from a nearby stinky tofu restaurant. The incident has prompted a re-evaluation of the restaurant by the Taipei City Environmental Protection Bureau, which had previously fined the establishment for exceeding odor concentration standards.
The Claim and Initial Response
Mr. A, a resident of Taipei’s Zhongshan District, shared a photo on social media platform ‘Thread’ depicting hair loss, along with a prescription for ointment, alleging that the persistent and potent smell from a stinky tofu restaurant near Jiannan Road MRT station caused him extreme stress, leading to hair loss. He stated he began pulling out his hair as a result of the overwhelming odor.
The Taipei City Environmental Protection Bureau responded by stating they had already conducted multiple inspections and implemented improvement measures at the restaurant. Authorities noted the business had received numerous odor complaints since opening in December 2024.
Previous Violations and Corrective Actions
An inspection in February 2024 revealed the odor concentration to be more than 10 times the permissible standard, resulting in a violation and a fine of approximately NT$585,000 (roughly KRW 26.89 million). The measured value at the time was 71, significantly exceeding the allowable limit of 10 for residential and commercial areas.
Following the fine, the restaurant installed exhaust purification and deodorization equipment. A subsequent inspection in April showed odor levels had decreased to within acceptable limits and complaints dropped to around 2-3 per month. No further issues were identified during a follow-up inspection.
Re-evaluation and Ongoing Concerns
However, recent renewed complaints on social media and an increase in civil complaints have prompted the authorities to announce a re-evaluation after the Lunar Modern Year holiday. Residents are being asked to provide specific measurement points to aid in the investigation.
Understanding Stinky Tofu
Stinky tofu (臭豆腐, chou dou fu) is a popular Taiwanese street food made by fermenting tofu in a brine containing spices. It is known for its strong, pungent aroma, which some find offensive while others enjoy. Despite the smell, many consider the taste to be quite palatable. Reddit discussions highlight the divisive nature of the dish, with some claiming the smell is far worse than the taste. As noted in one account, opinions on stinky tofu vary greatly, even among those trying it together.
The origins of stinky tofu are debated, with some theories suggesting it was discovered accidentally when tofu was left to ferment for too long. Taiwan Obsessed details a legend linking its creation to a scholar in Anhui province.
Stinky Tofu and Health Considerations
While generally considered safe to eat, the strong odor of stinky tofu can be a nuisance to those living nearby. The recent case highlights the potential for extreme odor to cause stress and, in rare cases, contribute to physical symptoms. Tripadvisor reviews confirm that stinky tofu is a well-known delicacy in Taiwan, made from fermented bean curd, and while it smells bad, many find it tastes good.
